    • Product Description

This replacement oven thermostat fits a range of oven models. Learn more about thermostats below:

What does the oven thermostat do?
The thermostat plays an important role in the operation of your cooker or oven. The thermostat is responsible for regulating the temperature of the oven. Thermostats will usually be located inside the oven and they have a capillary tube, or "phial" as it can be known, with a probe containing a gas. The gas inside the capillary tube expands and contracts in accordance with the oven temperature, which in turns switches the thermostat on/off to maintain the selected temperature.

Is a faulty thermostat causing the problem?
The thermostat may be a factor in your cooker failure if you are experiencing any of the following:

o The oven overheats and burns everything
o The oven is failing to reach the required temperature
o The oven element keeps blowing
o The oven cuts out after it has been on for a while
*Remember that although a failed thermostat is a likely cause of the above faults, it is not the only possible explanation.

When should you replace the thermostat?
The thermostat only needs to be replaced if it has become faulty. There are several things that can cause the thermostat to malfunction and become erratic or inaccurate; these include the capillary tube becoming fractured and internal contacts becoming welded together. When faults occur the thermostat may not be able to switch off, which means the oven element will heat continuously.

How to replace a faulty thermostat:
Before you can replace the thermostat you need to locate the faulty one. The location may vary depending on the model of oven you own; however on most ovens the thermostat will be located at the rear of the oven behind the control panel.

      1. Remove the back panel in order to gain access to the thermostat.
      2. Once the panel is removed you can use pliers to unclip the oven thermostat temperature sensor.
      3. The next step is to remove the control knob and the screws that hold the oven thermostat in place.
      4. Make a note of where all of the wires go. You are then in a position to remove and replace the oven thermostat and the capillary tube.
      * This is meant as a general guide and the process may differ depending on the model of oven you own.

      Any associated problems?
A faulty thermostat, in particular overheating, can cause the thermal overload cutout to blow if one is fitted to your oven. If this part fails then it may prevent the oven from operating, in some cases it will stop the electrical feed to the element or fan motor. Thermal overload cutouts are usually 'one fail' in design, this means that as soon as there is a problem the device needs to be replaced.

While you're replacing the oven thermostat, why not…
Check that the element hasn't blown. A failed thermostat can cause the element to heat continuously rather than maintaining a pre-selected temperature, this is a common cause of element failure and you may need to replace this at the same time. It is also a great opportunity to give the oven a good clean and replace any cosmetic parts like cooker knobs and oven shelves.

Expert tips from the appliance repair specialists
      1.
Thermostats can have a variety of wires. When you change the thermostat it is recommended that you take a photo on your mobile or digital camera to help remember where things are connected.
