The dishwasher spray arm consists of hollow plastic. It is designed to shoot high temperature and high-pressure water at the dishes and cutlery in order to clean them with efficiency. It is an absolutely essential part of a dishwasher, as without them the water would not distribute. Every dishwasher will have a lower spray arm, and some have an upper spray arm.

The following faults typically indicate a problem with the dishwasher spray arm:

- Cracked or broken spray arm or support
- Your dishes are not coming out clean
- Water is not being distributed evenly
- A leak from the front/door of the dishwasher
*Remember that a broken spray arm may not be the only fault that can cause these issues to arise.

Dishwasher spray arms are not meant to be worn out from general use, therefore, they only need to be changed if there is a fault. They rarely become a problem, but it is absolutely essential to change the spray arm as soon as it breaks as the appliance can't function properly without it.
