The dishwasher spray arm consists of hollow plastic and is designed to shoot high temperature and high pressure water at the dishes and cutlery in order to clean them with efficiency.

It is an absolutely essential part of a dishwasher, as without them the water would not distribute. Every dishwasher will have a lower spray arm, and some have an upper spray arm.

They rarely become a problem, but it is absolutely essential to change the spray arm as soon as it breaks as the appliance can't function properly without it. It is common that dishwasher spray arms can become clogged from all the bits of debris and food that collect in the appliance which causes water to spray towards the door and leak. A lot of the time, this problem can be rectified with a bit of unblocking, but sometimes they become beyond help.
